Bert & Ernie's Word Play (1969)

Available Formats:
DVD and VHS

The Muppets are putting on a play on words (get it?), a convenient framing device for a Sesame Street-style reading lesson. Get ready for some sticky, slippery fun when Prairie Dawn directs the G-rated vaudevillian act, complete with Bert and Ernie in straw hats telling corny jokes and a pie-throwing machine in fine working order. There are behind-the-scenes prop emergencies and a finale no-show, prompting rhyming lessons ("Oh, no, Hoho is a no-show!") and plenty of TV clips, including "I Am Chicken," the fowl take on the feminist anthem "I Am Woman." Elmo joins singing partners Mo and Flo in the stirring (substitute) finale, "We Got the Need to Read." Kindergarteners who think they're too old for Sesame Street might still get drawn in by challenges aimed at beginning readers.

Do the Alphabet (1996)

Available Formats:
DVD and VHS

When Baby Bear must learn his alphabet in one day, Big Bird patiently takes him under his wing in Do the Alphabet. Only "The Method," (a hilarious combination of dance, song, visualization, and group therapy) can help Baby Bear on such short notice. The result is 40 minutes of ABC's Sesame Street style, where vibrant educational cartoons, enthusiastic kids, famous guest stars (here, Billy Joel), and harmonizing Muppets make lasting educational impressions. Children age 2 to 6 will enjoy the upbeat musical numbers dedicated to various letters; a favorite segment features the Boogie Woogie Piggies and their flashy rendition of the alphabet song. Throughout the well-paced show, Big Bird offers just the right blend of coaching and friendship, much like the ace support group leader he's mildly spoofing. Hats off to Sesame Street for helping Baby Bear--and his viewing audience--understand that learning takes time, patience, and a team effort.

123 : Count With Me (1997)

Available Formats:
DVD and VHS

Join Ernie at The Furry Arms Hotel for a musical lesson in just how useful counting can be. When Ernie finds and returns a misplaced key, he uses his knowledge of numbers to return the key to the correct guest. As Ernie begins to learn about the hotel business, he finds many common situations in which counting is essential. Throughout the 30-minute video, Ernie and his friends help children learn to count from 1 to 20 with such songs as the jazzy "That's How the Numbers Go," an original version of the Chorus Line show tune "One," and "Rap Song #11." Favorite Sesame Street characters Elmo and The Count are joined by new characters including Ding the Dinger, a furry fellow with a bell on his head, and Benny, the bellboy that responds to Ding the Dinger's dings. Children as young as 18 months will bounce happily along with the catchy tunes and 2-year-olds will be inspired to count aloud with Ernie. Kids up to age 5 will hone their counting skills and laugh at the increasingly frustrated Benny as he delivers everything from 1 bucket of ice to 15 stampeding elephants! If you're looking for a fun video that teaches counting skills, here it is.

Sesame Street Presents Follow that Bird (1985)

    Available Formats:
DVD 2002 DVD Release and VHS

Follow That Bird is as much a journey through time as it is a romp past the Sesame Street stop sign. Curiously, the cast members--live ones like Gordon and Maria, not just the Muppets--have the timeless look to them. Only the cameos (by Sandra Bernhard, John Candy, and others) plus a few ill-conceived hairdos clue us in that this feature film was made in 1985. Otherwise, it's all sophisticated Sesame humor and bighearted fun here as Oscar, the Count, and crew set off to rescue Big Bird, who's on the lam from a family of adoptive dodos. Only one conceivable complaint: The latter crop of Street viewers may miss Elmo, who hadn't been created when Bird first flew into theaters.

    Description from Amazon.com

A meddling social worker sends poor Big Bird off to Ocean View, Illinios, for the comforts of family life with his "own kind," the Dodos. But Big Bird is a disaster as a Dodo and, lonely and homesick, he soon sets off on foot for Sesame Street. Can his old friends find him before he runs "afowl" of trouble en route?

It's a difficult task since everyone in the Sesame Street cast has an opinion. Beginning with the opening number, "Sing" (which gives cameos to Ben Stiller, Conan O'Brien, the Dixie Chicks, and more), the tunes come in rapid succession along with the usual bantering and balderdash of Kermit, Oscar, and the gang. There is no shortage of hilarity, whether watching Wayne Brady sing "Between" sandwiched in the middle of Big Bird and Snuffy; or Queen Latifah belt a rap rendition of "That's the Letter O." It is no wonder that Sesame Street remains timeless with such servings of exquisite entertainment targeted at youngsters yet enjoyed by all.

Sesame Street - Put Down The Duckie (1996)

    Available Formats:

This is probably one of the best Sesame Street specials on video. Great songs which range from Bob doing a round of "People in Your neighborhood" and Patty LaBelle's "How I Miss My Ex" to "Sing Your Synonyms" (a Sesame Street remake of sorts of the classic song "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off") and the title song. Great clips include "Monsterpiece Theatre" and a segment with Grover as the bumbling waiter.

    Cookie Monster's Best Bites (1995)

    Available Formats:
    DVD and VHS

America's favorite slave to baked goods, Cookie Monster, is the star of this very funny collection of comic sketches culled from the insatiable Muppet's tenure on Sesame Street. From the opening scene--in which the wild-eyed Cookie yields to pure impulse and devours a cookbook (rather than wait for a pastry recipe to be fully realized in his kitchen)--the longtime Children's Television Workshop character never fails to entertain with his charming anarchy. Also on the program are classic Sesame Street songs "C Is for Cookie" (and its spinoff, "C Drives Me Crazy," featuring a guest appearance by the Fine Young Cannibals), "If Moon Were a Cookie," and the touching "What Is Friend?" The high point, however, is the gravel-voiced Cookie's scene with actress Annette Bening, who helps him sort out the difference between a "Cookie Here and There." Wonderful stuff for all ages.

    Sesame Street's 25th Birthday - A Musical Celebration (1993)

    Available Formats:
    DVD and VHS

Yes, Virginia, there was a Sesame Street before the Age of Elmo. This 1993 collection highlights the role of music in the long-running series from Children's Television Workshop, and reminds us that such Jim Henson creations as Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch, Cookie Monster, and Ernie and Bert were once part of a true ensemble of Muppet superstars. Nothing against Elmo, of course: kids adore him and he makes enough appearances in this anthology (including the show-stopping "Happy Tappin' with Elmo") to keep today's tykes happy. Also included is Ernie's classic "Rubber Duckie" (really, who doesn't know the words to that?), Oscar's anthemic "I Love Trash," you-know-who's "C Is for Cookie," and Big Bird's Big Finale, a rendition of "Sing" that includes the entire cast. There are 27 tunes in all, and they don't all involve singing puppets: Ladysmith Black Mambazo turns up for one track, and the "Sesame Street Jam Session" includes some actual playing of instruments.

Sesame Street - Kids' Favorite Songs

    Available Formats:
    DVD and VHS

Kids' Favorite Songs kicks off with a cackle-worthy parody of Bob Dylan doing "Old McDonald," and from there the groovy gags keep comin' 'round the mountain. Everywhere Elmo turns on Sesame Street monsters spontaneously burst into song, and all because they want him to feature their favorite tunes on his forthcoming radio countdown. For Telly, winnowing the hits to one is akin to Cookie Monster choosing between a macaroon and a figgie bar: at first he's sure that "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" lights his fire, but then he says bye-bye to a black sheep. The street heaves a collective sigh pavementward when word comes down that the countdown is strictly a numbers gig, no music involved. Only Sesame Street could weave well-loved musical numbers around a simple numbers lesson with such wacky pizzazz, making this a countdown that's no letdown for high-spirited parent-preschooler combos.

    Description from Amazon.com

Elmo's getting ready for his Top Ten Countdown on the radio, and everyone on Sesame Street wants him to play their favorite songs? But with so many great songs to choose from, how will Elmo Pick which ones to play? Maybe you can help him decide. Which of these favorites is your favorite song?

The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland (1999)

    Available Formats:
    DVD and VHS

Welcome to Grouchland, U.S.A., place of a thousand stenches. This is where everyone's favorite red monster winds up when he stars in his first feature film, The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland. Elmo learns a lesson when he refuses to share his blanket with his best friend, Zoe, then loses it in Oscar's can, where it goes all the way to Grouchland. There the beloved blanket winds up in the clutches of the greediest man alive, Huxley (played by Mandy Patinkin), and Elmo has to venture alone to Huxley's lair to get it back. The Sesame Street gang follows Elmo but ends up in the Grouchland jail. Fortunately, whenever things start looking too bleak, our hosts Ernie and Bert stop the film and offer reassurance. There are also numerous opportunities for audience participation (canned kids' voices will prevent parents from feeling too silly when viewing at home). This 73-minute film has plenty to entertain the youngsters as well as details and inside jokes for parents. And of course there are marvelous animated effects--although seeing Elmo dance in 1999 isn't quite as remarkable as it was to see Kermit ride a bicycle in 1977's The Muppet Movie. The songs are fun and bouncy, and veteran performers Patinkin and Vanessa Williams (as the Queen of Trash) contribute their exceptional talent. The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland was conceived as a film kids could see in theaters; in the safe environs of home, it's good fun for anyone over the age of 2, or even younger in small doses.

The tape also contains an extended segment of Sesame Street in which Elmo learns all about bouncing balls.

    Sesame Street - Computer Caper

(Includes a Bonus Elmo's World episode)

    Available Formats:
    DVD and VHS

This lively 50-minute program uses live action, animation, and music to introduce computers to the preschool set. The caper begins when Telly gets an e-mail account and Luis helps him send a message to friends. Several characters, including Sesame Street favorites like Cookie Monster and Oscar, write back--and someone who signs their message, "Your Mystery Friend." Telly has no idea who this could be, so he joins up with Baby Bear and they follow the clues until the mystery is solved. The only segment that doesn't fit the theme is the song "I'm Fixing My Hair," which features children combing and brushing their hair. Computer Caper is an enjoyable look at basic concepts such as the screen, keyboard, mouse and some of the uses to which computers can be applied. It includes a special episode of Elmo's World with Emmy winner Michael Jeter as Mr. Noodle.

    Description from Amazon.com

Telly becomes a high-tech detective when a mysterious e-mail invites him to play the guessing game. With each new computer clue, he gets one step closer to discovering his mystery friend. Between clues, Elmo asks the musical question, "Where Are Computers in Your Neighborhood?" and Cookie Monster takes a mega-bite out of a computer cookie. It's a preschool-perfect introduction to today's world of technology!

    Let's Make Music (2000)

    Available Formats:
    DVD and VHS

Poor Telly: Just when the internationally acclaimed percussion troupe, Stomp, is on their way to Sesame Street for a jam session, he misplaces his tuba. Luckily, Telly's buddy, Elmo, explains that fancy instruments are not required to create music, and that's an invitation to 40 minutes of delightful noisemaking that reaches far beyond clanging pot lids. Soda bottles become woodwinds, pasta jars rattle like maracas, a plastic garbage can works as a bass drum, and if those items can't be found, feet and hands will do just fine. The half-dozen members of Stomp (themselves looking like Sesame Street alumnae) interact beautifully with the entire gang, whether playing a foot-tapping version of "Follow the Leader" with the kids or tooting a catchy ditty on empty bottles with Muppets and adults. Other familiar elements from the regular daytime Emmy award-winning show--including short educational cartoons, Muppet skits, video shorts of kids teaching kids, and lively dance numbers--make for a thoroughly enriching experience. Heartily recommended for children ages 3 to 7.

Elmo gives back to the community that made him an international preschool icon with this very special episode of Elmo's World, joining the entire human and monster cast of Sesame Street for a celebration of the program's 35th year. Learning the alphabet and counting to ten are child's play when basic math and literacy concepts are introduced and reinforced in live-action, animated, and musical segments. A highlight of this program is the all-star, all-dancing rendition of Ernie's bedtime tapping song, with some fancy footwork by, among others, Norah Jones, Julianne Moore, Lily Tomlin, Larry King, and Dr. Phil. Elmo's World : Babies, Dogs & More (2000)

    Available Formats:
    DVD and VHS

Sesame Street's cheerful redhead chuckles his way through this delightful 50-minute compilation of three favorite "Elmo's World" episodes. First come the babies: real babies, Muppet babies, and animal babies. With help from Mister Noodle, a cast of Muppets, and video vignettes featuring humans, Elmo discovers what babies can do and how to play with them. Next come the dogs. Once again, Elmo's on the move--this time to share important tips about respecting the family pet. The final episode examines life on the farm. Viewers will observe youngsters accomplishing daily farm chores as well as Muppet farmers and barn animals punning around. As Elmo bops around his house (simply drawn and "furnished" with color crayon sketches), he chats with Dorothy the pet goldfish, poses questions to Mister Noodle, and tunes in to his friendly television for helpful cartoons presented by "The Baby Channel," "The Dog Channel," and of course, "The Farm Channel." Educational and entertaining for the younger crowd, each segment explores its topic using a variety of creative, quick-paced methods, enhanced by an upbeat soundtrack.

    Elmo's World : Flowers, Bananas & More (2000)

    Available Formats:
    DVD and VHS

Flowers, Bananas & More--so titled, presumably, because Flowers, Bananas & Hair sounds kind of yucky--culls everybody's favorite 3-year-old monster's investigations of those things in a 50-minute tape. The Flowers episode cuts away from Elmo's crayon-filled playroom to follow a real, live boy in his quest to grow a plant. Through Elmo's lively voiceover, we learn that by filling a glass with a paper towel, a bean, and some water you can grow a bean pod, which is just what Elmo does, along with interviewing a friendly cactus and showing us a homemade video of Stinky the Plant, back in his world. In Bananas Mr. Noodle's usual bumbling with the object in question (Is it a telephone? A horn? A pen?) is a barrel of laughs, and we meet Top Banana, a spectacles- and bow tie-clad chap who brings his breed's health benefits to light. Hair, the final segment, is especially enlightening because every manner of the curious stuff shows up for a brief but thoughtful examination. By tuning us in to the Hair Channel, which is featuring a cartoon called "The Kingdom Where Everybody Wore His Hair the Same Way," Elmo leads us to the truth about hair: kinky or straight, short or long, everybody's got it, and what a person chooses to do with it doesn't count for much. Though it's bound to be a repeat for most kids, this is a tape that'll grow on budding botanists, stylists, and Elmo groupies in general.

    Elmo's World : Dancing Music Books (2000)

    Available Formats:
    DVD and VHS

Everyone's favorite preschool monster demonstrates three activities in this compilation of some popular Elmo's World segments from Sesame Street. Joining him are segment regulars Dorothy the pet goldfish and Mr. Noodle, the lovable, bumbling adult stand-in for children, who makes mistakes but perseveres until he gets it right. In each episode, real children also take turns mastering the skill. In "Dancing," Elmo shows off his finesse at the flamenco and hula, while the children choose more free-form moves. (Elmo's monster friend Zoe also makes a cameo appearance.) In "Books," a boy and his father visit the library in search of dinosaur books. And in "Music," kids play the flute and violin, while Mr. Noodle is a little slow in learning to bang the drum. For parents who meant to tape the "Elmo's World" segments, but never quite did it, this 45-minute video is a lucky break. Primarily for ages 2-5, but Elmo fans of all ages will enjoy it.

    Elmo's World : Birthdays, Games & More (2001)

    Available Formats:
    DVD and VHS

While it's true that Elmo's World is one that most 2- to 5-year-olds wouldn't mind waking up to any day of the week, Birthdays, Games & More makes plain that, as far as preschool meccas go, this is as good as it gets. Here, the furry little red guy gets the festivities under way watching real, live kid friends festoon pretty packages with colorful bows (his way of answering the endlessly curious Dorothy's question about how to wrap a present) before tuning into the Birthday Channel for a whirlwind trip to Mexico, where ebullient kids whack away at a piñata, and Israel, where a dizzy gang dips to the ground, doing its best to put on hats sans hands. After a chat with a talking birthday cake, it's game time. A chubby baby gets his toes tweaked in a round of "This Little Piggy"; Ernie and his ducky stop by via e-mail to demonstrate hide-and-go-squeak; and a couple of kids crack Elmo up with their search for Thumbkin, first in English, then in Spanish. The games give way, in a third segment, to a pack of pets. Mr. Noodle the lovable numbskull tries to play fetch with a fish; Elmo's tricky drawer trots out a parade of lettuce, a tiger, and a Telly monster, hoping for some help with the question "What can be a pet and what can't?"; and friend Alisa shows off Fluffy, her cat, and dog Spike. Taken together, Birthdays, Games & More is 60 minutes of playful, furry fun destined to be dusted off for repeat watchings by all wannabe Elmo's World inhabitants.

    Description from Amazon.com

First up, it's birthday time! Elmo knows everyone loves birthdays and here takes a close-up look at the celebration. The zany Mr. Noodle gives us a gift-wrapping lesson, but first gets caught up in the wrapping paper! Then we join a son and his father in their kitchen as they go through the steps of baking a birthday cake for mom. After that, we watch as Elmo is visited by a chatty birthday cake who playfully admits that being a cake is in fact, "a piece of cake!"

Who can think of all this birthday fun without games coming to mind? Elmo loves to play games and here he explores all his favorites with his Sesame Street friends. Mr. Noodle joins in the fun with a jump rope lesson, of course, with a little silliness mixed in. Two Sesame Street kids teach each other 'where is thumpkin' in both English and Spanish. Finally, Elmo uses his imagination to become a basketball star where he announces, "Elmo got game!"

Pets are last up on this fun-filled home video. First, Mr. Noodle tries to play fetch with a goldfish and a hamster before Barkely the dog shows up. Then, kids explain how they play with their own pets - lizards, cats and guinea pugs included. Last up, Elmo gets a real sense of what being a pet is like when he imagines himself as a fish, a hamster, and a bird!

Elmo's World : Head to Toe With Elmo (2002)

    Available Formats:
    DVD and VHS

Certainly not the preschooler's body-part primer implied by its title, Head to Toe with Elmo simply unfolds the great mysteries of jackets, hats, and shoes. This combo induces plenty of chuckles for Elmo, the scruffy red-furred host who loves interviewing kids, babies, talking clothing, and his (real) pet goldfish. As little Elmo flits about his crayon-scribbled environs, he poses lots of questions to preschoolers at home: "How do you put on your jacket?" "Who wears hats and who doesn't?" and "What do shoes do when nobody is wearing them?" Plucked directly from the highly acclaimed Sesame Street show, each 15-minute segment features a fast-paced blend of video vignettes, goofy Mr. Noodle encounters, Elmo's own purposefully amateur home movies, and laughs for the grownups who might be watching. Not to say Elmo's jokes always fly, but kids can't seem to get enough of this wholesome, curious, and informative critter.

    Elmo's World : Springtime Fun (2002)

    Available Formats:
    DVD and VHS

The endearing, red-mopped Muppet is back for a romp through spring, offering preschoolers a potpourri of animated and live-action snippets showcasing seasonal favorites: birds, bugs, and bicycles. Elmo, the host of this vintage Sesame Street program, chats gaily while ushering in familiar guests Prairie Dawn, Ernie and Bert, and Grover during three 15-minute "chapters." Tongue-in-cheek spoofs ("The Loon Ranger," "The Dick Van Bike Show") are blended with general zaniness (think Mr. Noodle) to keep youngsters laughing as they learn. Catering to a child's short attention span, the fast-paced medley includes interactive games, sing-alongs, and engaging film of kids and critters. Especially heartwarming is footage of ducklings hatching and helmet-clad children pedaling without training wheels. In an effort to stay timely, Elmo's World charms its computer-savvy audience with references to the World Wide Web and "You've Got Mail," but there's no need: everyone knows Elmo is timeless.

Sesame Street Presents Elmo's Musical Adventures - Peter & The Wolf (2001)

    Available Formats:
    DVD and VHS

Tag along for Elmo's musical adventure with Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf and prepare to strike an unlikely pose, with one foot planted in the friendliest, furriest neighborhood anybody knows and the other in a sophisticated, sonically souped-up concert arena--Boston's Symphony Hall. The video unites the two seemingly mismatched worlds seamlessly, pulling off its unstated but pretty obvious goal, which is to siphon off the classical genre's outermost layer of stuffiness to make it more accessible to little kids, with Sesame-style punch and simplicity. Baby Bear leads viewers into Peter's forest by way of his ticket to see the Boston Pops Orchestra. Backstage he meets conductor Keith Lockhart, who serves as tour guide for a thorough but breezy showcase of various instruments, allowing the lisping little bear to get a grip on which sound portrays which character. Happy-go-lucky Peter, played by a peasant-costumed Elmo, is center stage during violin solos; the scary-sounding French horn signals the approach of the wolf--normally a ferocious fellow, but in this case a harmless furry purple guy. These days, with the gospel about the benefits of music education spreading at fever pitch, this 45-minute gem could be promoted as a way to get preschoolers in on the action. Beyond that, it's a charming chucklefest that's as effective as any intro you'll find to the classic tale. Elmo tickles audiences of all ages as Peter, and Big Bird, with help from the bassoon, spreads his wings in the role of the brave but foolhardy boy's grandfather.

    Product Description from Manufacturer

This video is very educational. It does start off with a smoke fire in which Elmo gets very scared and begins to shake. This can be scary for a child and I would recommend watching it with your child. (My son is 19 months old and did not find it scary, but he is still very young.) It is very realistic and shows children what it would be like if there was ever a fire. It is wonderful and teaches childrn all about firemen and the firehouse and what to do in case of a fire. There are cute songs that teach fire safety, like "Get out, stay out, don't you go back in". Another excellent lesson is that children should not hide from the firemen. In the event of a real fire a child will be terrified and may mistake the fireman for a monster. This movie explains that firemen are there to help and not to be afraid of them.

Sesame Street Kids' Guide to Life - Telling the Truth (1997)

    Available Formats:
    DVD and VHS

Elmo and Telly share billing on this half-hour instructional video that gently preaches the virtue of being forthright. The lesson begins as Gina reads "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" to her day-care charges. Elmo dreams himself into the tale, in which no sheep are eaten and the offending wolf ends up tied to a tree. Meanwhile, Telly seems to be the only one who hasn't been or isn't going to the circus. Feeling left out, he tells them his Uncle Tommy (Dennis Quaid) is the ringmaster. Of course, he gets found out, is forgiven, and joins Uncle Tommy, Gina, and the gang in a big song-and-dance number. The irony for adults and older kids is that Uncle Tommy is actually an astronaut, not exactly a low-profile job. But even his uncle gets the call to blast off into space without the benefit of a rocket ship: Telly announces that he loves him even if he's not a circus employee. Stay tuned after the credits for a one-minute message from Quaid. (Ages 2 and older)

    CinderElmo (2000)

    Available Formats:
    DVD and VHS

Our favorite little red monster is the star of this delightful film that playfully skews the story of Cinderella. Originally aired on Fox television in 1999, the feature is a playful mix of human actors and Sesame Street characters that is an easy watch for families with 3- to 7-year-olds. Cinderelmo (he's a boy, if you didn't know) dreams of playing in a castle and meeting the princess (Keri Russell). Unfortunately his mean--but not that mean--stepmother (Kathy Najimy) wants her two other sons to go to the ball at which the princess must declare whom she wishes to marry.

The film is certainly focused on the youngsters (as opposed to the slightly older audience of the Muppet films), but there are plenty of puns and wry humor for adults to enjoy. The handful of songs are quite pleasant, as is the length (50 minutes). Oliver Platt (as a new "fairy godperson") and French Stewart (as Cinderelmo's dog-turned-footman) enjoy their roles with relish. Appearing in various small roles are plenty of the Sesame Street gang, including Grover, Kermit, Cookie Monster, Bert, and Ernie. Great fun.

Christmas Eve on Sesame Street (1978)

    Available Formats:
    DVD and VHS

This Emmy Award-winning musical from 1978 explores an age-old Christmas conundrum: how does a big guy like Santa Claus squeeze down all those narrow chimneys? When Big Bird and his Sesame Street friends set out to find the answer one Christmas Eve, they explore a variety of amusing theories and learn a lot about the meaning of Christmas in the process. You won't want to miss seeing all your favorite Sesame Street characters as they take to the ice at a nearby skating rink. Perhaps the most enjoyable feature of all is the wealth of wonderful music--everything from traditional Christmas songs to the now famous "Keep Christmas with You" by Joe Raposo. Several numbers are signed in American Sign Language and there's even a brief mention of Hanukkah. This 60-minute, classic Sesame Street special, which teaches kids from 2 to 10 to value giving more than receiving and stresses the importance of love and togetherness, is also thoroughly entertaining.

    Description from Amazon.com

This classic holiday program is pure, utter magic for the whole family. I loved this program as a child, and it remains a must-see for me and my family at the holidays to this day. I (thankfully) grew up in the pre-Elmo Sesame Street era, and this show always brings back wonderful holiday memories. The music is unforgettable, especially "True Blue Miracle" and "Keep Christmas With You". The Sesame Muppets are in true form: Big Bird searching for the secret of how Santa gets down the chimney at Oscar's prompting; Cookie eats a pencil, typewriter, and phone while attempting to make his cookie wish list for Santa; Bert and Ernie take a lesson from O'Henry's "Gift of the Magi" as they give up what they treasure most to be able to make each other happy with the perfect gift, but it's Mr. Hooper who reminds them of what's really important. The ice skating party at the beginning is a gem-especially the side-splitting "snap the whip" scene! And at the end, everyone comes together to celebrate friendship and love, as Big Bird, who had gone missing, comes home and realizes it's not the gifts at Christmas that matter: what matters is giving the gift of love everyday to the people you care about. It's all done without being overly precious or preachy. My niece and nephews love it-I'm happy to see it move on to a new generation in our family. I haven't seen it on TV in years, which is a shame, and my VHS copy was taped off TV years ago and in bad shape, so I was thrilled to see it on DVD. Elmo who? You'll never even miss him. His nervous bundle of hyper-energy would be out of place in this sweet, warm, funny, wonderful holiday program. It's magic.

    Elmo Saves Christmas (1996)

    Available Formats:
    DVD and VHS

The show opens on a Christmas scene, featuring Maya Angelou explaining to Muppet characters how Elmo once got his wish that every day could be Christmas--and soon regretted it. Charles Durning and Harvey Fierstein are also on board, and there's a new friend in Lightning the reindeer, plus lots of songs. The whooshing Christmas-season feel to the story is infectious.

    Big Bird in China (1987)

    Available Format:
DVD, VHS, and Original VHS Edition

This is a wonderful look at China with an awesome tour guide...Big Bird. There is wonderful view of China along with a simple but enjoyable childrens fairytale/detective style story. My children who are now 18 & 17 are buying another copy for their new Chinese cousin as a gift. They remember this as one of their fondest childhood memories. This is a must have for any young child.

This is a delightful video and can be truly appreciated by people who have been to China and people who have adopted children from China. My 2 year old chinese daughter loves this video and enjoys the chinese children and dancers in the movie, not to mention Big Bird! It combines history and historical landmarks with the people and culture of China. And the little girl in the movie is adorable!

    Description from Amazon.com Customer Reviews

I credit this movie, along with Big Bird in Japan, for my current love for oriental culture and lifestyle. The sheer beauty of these movies is a great way for kids to become aquainted to China. The footage of the mountains, temples, and other wildlife in this movie is breath-taking, plus cultural examples, such as the clip of the citizens doing Ta'i Chi. The music is also very good. I begged my parents to tape it when i was little, only a few years old. I am 14 now, and am not embarassed to say that I will still watch them occasionally when I am bored just to see the the beauty of the Orient. They are on an old tape with other movies, so I am happy to find that these are available for purchase, and will do so ASAP. To anyone who has an interest in foreign culture or wishes to immerse their child in a new culture- Big Bird in China and Japan is an excellent way to do it and instill lasting loves for culture and memories in your child.
