While it's true that Elmo's World is one that most 2- to 5-year-olds wouldn't mind waking up to any day of the week, Birthdays, Games & More makes plain that, as far as preschool meccas go, this is as good as it gets. First up, it's birthday time! Elmo knows everyone loves birthdays and here takes a close-up look at the celebration. The zany Mr. Noodle gives us a gift-wrapping lesson, but first gets caught up in the wrapping paper! Then we join a son and his father in their kitchen as they go through the steps of baking a birthday cake for mom. After that, we watch as Elmo is visited by a chatty birthday cake who playfully admits that being a cake is in fact, "a piece of cake!"
Who can think of all this birthday fun without games coming to mind? Elmo loves to play games and here he explores all his favorites with his Sesame Street friends. Mr. Noodle joins in the fun with a jump rope lesson, of course, with a little silliness mixed in. Two Sesame Street kids teach each other 'where is thumpkin' in both English and Spanish. Flowers, Bananas & More--so titled, presumably, because Flowers, Bananas & Hair sounds kind of yucky--culls everybody's favorite 3-year-old monster's investigations of those things in a 50-minute tape. The Flowers episode cuts away from Elmo's crayon-filled playroom to follow a real, live boy in his quest to grow a plant. Through Elmo's lively voiceover, we learn that by filling a glass with a paper towel, a bean, and some water you can grow a bean pod, which is just what Elmo does, along with interviewing a friendly cactus and showing us a homemade video of Stinky the Plant, back in his world. In Bananas Mr. Noodle's usual bumbling with the object in question (Is it a telephone? A horn? A pen?) is a barrel of laughs, and we meet Top Banana, a spectacles- and bow tie-clad chap who brings his breed's health benefits to light. Hair, the final segment, is especially enlightening because every manner of the curious stuff shows up for a brief but thoughtful examination. By tuning us in to the Hair Channel, which is featuring a cartoon called "The Kingdom Where Everybody Wore His Hair the Same Way," Elmo leads us to the truth about hair: kinky or straight, short or long, everybody's got it, and what a person chooses to do with it doesn't count for much. Though it's bound to be a repeat for most kids, this is a tape that'll grow on budding botanists, stylists, and Elmo groupies in general.

Everyone's favorite preschool monster demonstrates three activities in this compilation of some popular Elmo's World segments from Sesame Street. Joining him are segment regulars Dorothy the pet goldfish and Mr. Noodle, the lovable, bumbling adult stand-in for children, who makes mistakes but perseveres until he gets it right. In each episode, real children also take turns mastering the skill. In "Dancing," Elmo shows off his finesse at the flamenco and hula, while the children choose more free-form moves. (Elmo's monster friend Zoe also makes a cameo appearance.) In "Books," a boy and his father visit the library in search of dinosaur books. And in "Music," kids play the flute and violin, while Mr. Noodle is a little slow in learning to bang the drum. For parents who meant to tape the "Elmo's World" segments, but never quite did it, this 45-minute video is a lucky break. Primarily for ages 2-5, but Elmo fans of all ages will enjoy it.

This representative retrospective is an object lesson in why Sesame Street has stayed at the head of the class. Learning the alphabet and counting to ten are child's play when basic math and literacy concepts are introduced and reinforced in live-action, animated, and musical segments. A highlight of this program is the all-star, all-dancing rendition of Ernie's bedtime tapping song, with some fancy footwork by, among others, Norah Jones, Julianne Moore, Lily Tomlin, Larry King, and Dr. Phil. "Elmo loves Sesame Street and his friends very much," proclaims the little red monster -- even if Oscar the Grouch calls him "little red menace." Right back atcha, Elmo. Here's to another 35 years. |

Certainly not the preschooler's body-part primer implied by its title, Head to Toe with Elmo simply unfolds the great mysteries of jackets, hats, and shoes. This combo induces plenty of chuckles for Elmo, the scruffy red-furred host who loves interviewing kids, babies, talking clothing, and his (real) pet goldfish. As little Elmo flits about his crayon-scribbled environs, he poses lots of questions to preschoolers at home: "How do you put on your jacket?" "Who wears hats and who doesn't?" and "What do shoes do when nobody is wearing them?" Plucked directly from the highly acclaimed Sesame Street show, each 15-minute segment features a fast-paced blend of video vignettes, goofy Mr. Noodle encounters, Elmo's own purposefully amateur home movies, and laughs for the grownups who might be watching. Not to say Elmo's jokes always fly, but kids can't seem to get enough of this wholesome, curious, and informative critter.

The endearing, red-mopped Muppet is back for a romp through spring, offering preschoolers a potpourri of animated and live-action snippets showcasing seasonal favorites: birds, bugs, and bicycles. Elmo, the host of this vintage Sesame Street program, chats gaily while ushering in familiar guests Prairie Dawn, Ernie and Bert, and Grover during three 15-minute "chapters." Tongue-in-cheek spoofs ("The Loon Ranger," "The Dick Van Bike Show") are blended with general zaniness (think Mr. Noodle) to keep youngsters laughing as they learn. Catering to a child's short attention span, the fast-paced medley includes interactive games, sing-alongs, and engaging film of kids and critters. Especially heartwarming is footage of ducklings hatching and helmet-clad children pedaling without training wheels. In an effort to stay timely, Elmo's World charms its computer-savvy audience with references to the World Wide Web and "You've Got Mail," but there's no need: everyone knows Elmo is timeless.

While it's true that Elmo's World is one that most 2- to 5-year-olds wouldn't mind waking up to any day of the week, Birthdays, Games & More makes plain that, as far as preschool meccas go, this is as good as it gets. Here, the furry little red guy gets the festivities under way watching real, live kid friends festoon pretty packages with colorful bows (his way of answering the endlessly curious Dorothy's question about how to wrap a present) before tuning into the Birthday Channel for a whirlwind trip to Mexico, where ebullient kids whack away at a piñata, and Israel, where a dizzy gang dips to the ground, doing its best to put on hats sans hands. After a chat with a talking birthday cake, it's game time. A chubby baby gets his toes tweaked in a round of "This Little Piggy"; Ernie and his ducky stop by via e-mail to demonstrate hide-and-go-squeak; and a couple of kids crack Elmo up with their search for Thumbkin, first in English, then in Spanish. The games give way, in a third segment, to a pack of pets. Mr. Noodle the lovable numbskull tries to play fetch with a fish; Elmo's tricky drawer trots out a parade of lettuce, a tiger, and a Telly monster, hoping for some help with the question "What can be a pet and what can't?"; and friend Alisa shows off Fluffy, her cat, and dog Spike. Taken together, Birthdays, Games & More is 60 minutes of playful, furry fun destined to be dusted off for repeat watchings by all wannabe Elmo's World inhabitants.
First up, it's birthday time! Elmo knows everyone loves birthdays and here takes a close-up look at the celebration. The zany Mr. Noodle gives us a gift-wrapping lesson, but first gets caught up in the wrapping paper! Then we join a son and his father in their kitchen as they go through the steps of baking a birthday cake for mom. After that, we watch as Elmo is visited by a chatty birthday cake who playfully admits that being a cake is in fact, "a piece of cake!" Who can think of all this birthday fun without games coming to mind? Elmo loves to play games and here he explores all his favorites with his Sesame Street friends. Mr. Noodle joins in the fun with a jump rope lesson, of course, with a little silliness mixed in. Two Sesame Street kids teach each other 'where is thumpkin' in both English and Spanish. Finally, Elmo uses his imagination to become a basketball star where he announces, "Elmo got game!" Pets are last up on this fun-filled home video. First, Mr. Noodle tries to play fetch with a goldfish and a hamster before Barkely the dog shows up. Then, kids explain how they play with their own pets - lizards, cats and guinea pugs included. Last up, Elmo gets a real sense of what being a pet is like when he imagines himself as a fish, a hamster, and a bird! |

Sesame Street's cheerful redhead chuckles his way through this delightful 50-minute compilation of three favorite "Elmo's World" episodes. First come the babies: real babies, Muppet babies, and animal babies. With help from Mister Noodle, a cast of Muppets, and video vignettes featuring humans, Elmo discovers what babies can do and how to play with them. Next come the dogs. Once again, Elmo's on the move--this time to share important tips about respecting the family pet. The final episode examines life on the farm. Viewers will observe youngsters accomplishing daily farm chores as well as Muppet farmers and barn animals punning around. As Elmo bops around his house (simply drawn and "furnished" with color crayon sketches), he chats with Dorothy the pet goldfish, poses questions to Mister Noodle, and tunes in to his friendly television for helpful cartoons presented by "The Baby Channel," "The Dog Channel," and of course, "The Farm Channel." Educational and entertaining for the younger crowd, each segment explores its topic using a variety of creative, quick-paced methods, enhanced by an upbeat soundtrack.

Flowers, Bananas & More--so titled, presumably, because Flowers, Bananas & Hair sounds kind of yucky--culls everybody's favorite 3-year-old monster's investigations of those things in a 50-minute tape. The Flowers episode cuts away from Elmo's crayon-filled playroom to follow a real, live boy in his quest to grow a plant. Through Elmo's lively voiceover, we learn that by filling a glass with a paper towel, a bean, and some water you can grow a bean pod, which is just what Elmo does, along with interviewing a friendly cactus and showing us a homemade video of Stinky the Plant, back in his world. In Bananas Mr. Noodle's usual bumbling with the object in question (Is it a telephone? A horn? A pen?) is a barrel of laughs, and we meet Top Banana, a spectacles- and bow tie-clad chap who brings his breed's health benefits to light. Hair, the final segment, is especially enlightening because every manner of the curious stuff shows up for a brief but thoughtful examination. By tuning us in to the Hair Channel, which is featuring a cartoon called "The Kingdom Where Everybody Wore His Hair the Same Way," Elmo leads us to the truth about hair: kinky or straight, short or long, everybody's got it, and what a person chooses to do with it doesn't count for much. Though it's bound to be a repeat for most kids, this is a tape that'll grow on budding botanists, stylists, and Elmo groupies in general.

Everyone's favorite preschool monster demonstrates three activities in this compilation of some popular Elmo's World segments from Sesame Street. Joining him are segment regulars Dorothy the pet goldfish and Mr. Noodle, the lovable, bumbling adult stand-in for children, who makes mistakes but perseveres until he gets it right. In each episode, real children also take turns mastering the skill. In "Dancing," Elmo shows off his finesse at the flamenco and hula, while the children choose more free-form moves. (Elmo's monster friend Zoe also makes a cameo appearance.) In "Books," a boy and his father visit the library in search of dinosaur books. And in "Music," kids play the flute and violin, while Mr. Noodle is a little slow in learning to bang the drum. For parents who meant to tape the "Elmo's World" segments, but never quite did it, this 45-minute video is a lucky break. Primarily for ages 2-5, but Elmo fans of all ages will enjoy it.
